TEMPORARY REFUGE AIR LEAKAGE RATE TESTING

Overview

The Temporary Refuge (TR) area will be tested for its structural integrity & airtightness of the envelope. This will be achieved by doing induced pressure tests.

The basic principle of a pressure test on a TR is that a pressure is applied internally and the air leakage rate is measured.

Typically, a fan or blower door is installed by removing one of the TR's external doors on-site or using the existing doorway, keeping the existing door arrested fully open.

When the TR is sealed (dampers activated and all external doors & windows closed) the fan/blower door is run to pressurize the TR to the test pressure setting.

If there are any paths allowing air leakage in the TR, the fan or blower will need to maintain a consistent airflow rate to uphold the set pressure within the TR.

This airflow rate is observed and used to evaluate the leakage characteristics of the TR.

   The test method consists of mechanical pressurization or depressurization of TR and measurements of the resulting airflow rates at given indoor-outdoor static pressure differences.

From the relationship between the airflow rates and pressure differences, the air leakage characteristics of the TR envelope are determined.

This test will be conducted by using blower door system.

The entire zone is pressurized or depressurized to a uniform pressure and the leakage measured is the Total Zone Leakage.

Multiple fans are required for testing an enclosure when the maximum flow generated by the power of one fan is not enough to reach the desired test pressure.

This problem occurs because there is too much leakage in the building to reach the target pressure.



  • Ability to test a wide range of enclosures, from super leaky to super tight. This high-output fan includes 6 standards + 3 optional low-flow ranges to provide accurate results over the widest range of enclosure volumes.
  • Testing according to ISO 9972 standards. (Other available Testing Standards are ASTM E779, USACE, ATTMA, EN13829 & CGSB)
  • Testing performed by Retrotec-certified engineers
  • The @ Pressure function provides unique advantages over non-extrapolated results
  • Flexibility to accommodate most doorways between 29" to 44" (74cm to 112cm) in width, and 53" to 97" (134cm to 247cm) in height.
  • Various power supply options:
    • 230V/1ph/60hz (26A max)
    • 460V/3ph/60hz (13A max)
    • 120V/1ph/60hz (50A max)
  • Entirely software guided test with software generated report using FanTestic program
  • Multiple fans setup can be added in series for enclosures with huge volume and at different locations & levels of the enclosure
  • Individual fan air volume:
    • Free Air - 13,760 CMH
    • @ 50 Pa - 13,080 CMH
    • @ 75 Pa - 12,570 CMH
  • Pressurization & de-pressurization tests
  • Ducting air leak test using duct tester to identify air leak at the ducting system
  • Smoke test using hand-held smoke puffer to identify leak pathway at the TR enclosure
